Point Nemo

Point of Unease

The famous fictional sea monster or the true unknown space cemetary

“Point Nemo” is based on the real-life point in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. Being the farthest spot away on earth from any land and chance of hitting anyone, it has been deemed the safest area to send space debris. In attempts to reduce pollution in space this area of the ocean has accumulated 40 years worth of waste. It has more than 263 total space debris.

The famous sea monster, the Kraken, is a folklore passed down from centuries of seasman and has survived to present day. Although this is a fictional being, it holds more unease and knowledge than a alarming real pollution issue.

Parrallels of space and deep see are brought forth in this moment of interaction. Although normally space and sea are separate, this illustration addresses their many commonalities. Lack of oxygen, light, weight, and knowledge of exsisting life are all fascinating mutualities.

Both thrilling in what we wonder about them. One thing we do know: they both house our growing pollution.
